Banaras keeps a calendar denser than its lanes — the saying goes "saat vaar, nau tyohaar": seven days in a week, nine festivals. These four are worth planning an entire yatra around, from the night a million diyas answer the full moon to the afternoon a boy-Krishna leaps into the river.
All of Kashi's great festivals follow the lunar panchang, so dates drift against the Gregorian calendar each year — always reconfirm before booking. The richest single window is Kartik (October–November): the Ganga Mahotsav concerts, the Nag Nathaiya leela at Tulsi Ghat and Dev Deepawali's million lamps all fall within three weeks, in perfect weather. Mahashivratri (February–March) is the city's own wedding party. Hotels for these windows fill months ahead — see our yatra tips for season-by-season advice.
